The word seminar has a Latin origin, a word meaning ‘the place for sowing the seed of knowledge’. They are a key feature of a Masters degree and it is important students engage and contribute their own ideas in a constructive manner. Six key actions from connecting with peers to taking notes at the time and later are outlined as principles for students to get the most out of seminars. Within group work a set of six stages is described from individualization to evaluation alongside the key role of empathy and constructive feedback. Advice on the effective use of slides (usually in PowerPoint) in presentations is offered and a chance for students to reflect on what does not work in presentations as well as how to deal with the inevitable nerves. Seminars and group work are characterized as places where environments where students can ask questions and clarify points with lecturers and classmates that are worth taking full advantage of.
